Post-Graduate Work Permit

Foreign nationals who have successfully completed a post-secondary program in Canada as international students, may apply for their Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). With these work permits, international students can live and work in the country after the completion of their study.

  • Eligibility Criteria

Post-graduation work permits are not direct permanent residence programs. They however allow international students that have graduated from designated learning institutions to continue to stay in the country after the expiration of their study and work a period with a Canadian employer. This is a great way to qualify for your Canadian permanent residence, mostly through an employer-driven Provincial Nominee Program or a Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

To be considered eligible for Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

    • The foreign national must not be less than 18 years old and
    • Must have studied full-time in a recognised program in Canada for a minimum of 8 months
    • The program must be one from the Designated Learning Institutions (DLI) in any of the programs listed below
    • Foreign nationals who wish to apply for a work permit must do so within 180 days of completing their study program

If the applicant is applying from Canada, said applicant must have a valid status at the time of application. They can apply for visitor status before applying for their PGWP if their study permit is about to expire or has expired. And applicants who apply for their PGWP before their study program expires can start working full-time, while they wait for the application.

  • Programs and Levels of study that are considered eligible for PGWPs:

    • Public post-secondary schools, like colleges, university or trade/technical schools, or CEGEP if you’re in Quebec; or
    • Private post-secondary schools operating under the same rules governing public schools (only applicable to certain Quebec institutions); or
    • Private secondary and post-secondary (for Quebec) offering qualifying programs that last for 900 hours or more, resulting in an attestation de spécialisation professionnelle (ASP) or a  diplôme d’études professionnelles (DEP); or
    • Any Canadian private school that is authorized to award degrees under their provincial law for those enrolled in different degree study programs as provided by the laws of the province.

Note that, those international students that receive funding through foreign financial aid programs like Global Affairs Canada (GAC) may not be eligible to get post-graduation work permits.

The validity of a post-graduation work permit can last between eight months to three years. It is impossible for the duration of a PGWP to last longer than the duration of the applicant’s study in Canada. The PGWP will generally not exceed the duration of the applicant’s Canadian study, with a maximum of 3 years.
